Small plumbing jobs: what a handyman may handle and what needs a specialist
Some bathroom and kitchen fixes are straightforward; others should go straight to a qualified specialist.
Be clear about the symptom
“Small leak under sink” is useful, but “drip from plastic waste trap after washing machine drains” is better. Send photos from inside the cabinet, underneath the fitting and from further back so access is visible.
Know the sensible limits
A handyman may help with basic non-gas tasks such as toilet seats, tap fittings, waste traps, silicone, washers and accessories where suitable. Anything involving gas, major pipework, hidden leaks, pressurised systems or specialist diagnosis should go to the right qualified trade.
Turn off water if needed
If there is active water escape, protect the area and turn off the relevant isolation valve if you can do so safely. Do not wait for a quote form if water is causing damage.
Check surrounding materials
Water damage can affect cabinets, skirting, floors and plaster. A tiny leak may become a joinery or decorating repair once the plumbing issue is fixed. Photograph any staining, swelling or mould so the full scope is understood.
Do not disturb suspect materials
Older pipe boxing, panels and textured materials should be treated carefully. HSE asbestos guidance is worth reading if you are unsure about older materials that may be disturbed during access or repair.
