Full FAQ
Before we fix it, let's make it clear.
Answers for homeowners, tenants, landlords, letting agents and small businesses looking for handyman repairs and maintenance across Glasgow and the Central Belt.
Booking and quotes
What does Block & Bolt do?
Block & Bolt is a small Glasgow handyman and home repair team. We handle practical repair, maintenance and improvement work such as wall repairs, painting, joinery, fittings, flat-pack assembly, shelves, handles, doors, trims, landlord maintenance and room refreshes.
How do I request a quote?
Send your name, contact details, postcode, photos if available and a clear list of what needs done. You can also call 07869 802821 if you would rather speak to us first. The more detail you provide, the easier it is for us to give a sensible quote or next step.
Can you quote from photos?
Often, yes. Photos are especially useful for wall damage, fixtures, flat-pack items, painting areas, access issues and small repairs. Some jobs still need an in-person look before a fixed price is possible.
What information helps you quote faster?
Helpful details include photos from a few angles, measurements, postcode, parking/access information, property type, preferred dates, whether materials are supplied, and whether the property is occupied, tenanted or empty.
Do you do same-day or urgent jobs?
Sometimes. It depends on location, workload, materials and the type of issue. Urgent work may cost more if it requires reshuffling jobs, out-of-hours attendance or immediate material collection.
Do you take very small jobs?
Yes. Small jobs are part of what we do. If the job is tiny, it may be more cost-effective to group several tasks into one visit.
Services and job types
What handyman jobs do you cover?
Typical jobs include shelves, curtain poles, mirrors, TV brackets, handles, hinges, sealant, wall patching, small joinery, trims, doors, flat-pack furniture, paint touch-ups, minor repairs and general maintenance lists.
Do you do painting?
Yes. We can help with touch-ups, repaired patches, single rooms, freshening rental properties and smaller painting jobs. Larger decorating projects can be discussed depending on scope and availability.
Do you do joinery?
We handle practical joinery and fitting work such as trims, skirting repairs, doors, shelving, storage tweaks and small timber repairs. We will tell you if a job needs a specialist joiner or structural professional.
Do you do plumbing or electrical work?
We can discuss very basic non-regulated tasks, but we do not present ourselves as gas engineers or electricians. Regulated gas work, major electrical work and safety-critical work must be handled by properly qualified specialists.
Do you assemble flat-pack furniture?
Yes. We can assemble wardrobes, desks, cabinets, shelves and other flat-pack items. Please make sure all boxes, fixings and instructions are on site before we arrive.
Can you refresh a room before sale or letting?
Yes. A room refresh can include patching, painting, fittings, snagging, shelves, trim repairs and final touches that make a space cleaner and more presentable.
Do you work in tenement flats?
Yes. Glasgow tenements are part of the local reality. Please tell us about stairs, parking, entry systems, factor rules, shared areas and any access restrictions before booking.
Pricing, deposits and payment
Do you charge a call-out fee?
Some jobs may include a call-out or minimum visit charge, especially for small repairs. We will make this clear before booking.
Are quotes fixed?
A fixed quote covers the agreed scope only. If the job changes, hidden defects appear, materials are different from expected or access is worse than described, the price may need to change.
Why might a price change after you arrive?
Common reasons include damp, rotten timber, unsafe surfaces, missing parts, wrong materials, previous poor repairs, hidden pipe or cable risks, difficult access or extra tasks added on the day.
Do you take deposits?
We may ask for a deposit or materials payment for larger jobs, booked time, specialist materials, made-to-measure items or non-returnable products.
When is payment due?
Unless agreed otherwise, payment is due when the work is completed or when the invoice is issued. Larger jobs may require staged payments.
Can I add extra jobs during the visit?
Usually, if time allows. Extra jobs may be priced separately and may require another visit if they need materials or more time.
Property access and preparation
How should I prepare before you arrive?
Clear the work area, move fragile items, secure pets, provide parking/access instructions, make sure materials are on site and tell us about any known hazards or restrictions.
Do I need to be home?
Not always. If access is arranged and the scope is clear, we may be able to work while you are away. For occupied homes, someone should usually be available at the start or reachable by phone.
Can you collect keys?
Sometimes, by arrangement. Key collection, return and waiting time may affect the price. We will need clear permission if a tenant, landlord or agent is involved.
Do you protect floors and furniture?
We take reasonable care and use practical protection where appropriate. Customers should remove valuables, delicate items and anything that could be damaged in the work area.
What if there is no parking?
Please tell us before booking. Parking restrictions, loading distance, permits or paid parking can affect timing and cost, especially when tools or materials are involved.
Landlords, agents and rental properties
Do you work with landlords?
Yes. We can help with repair lists, end-of-tenancy touch-ups, pre-viewing fixes, small maintenance jobs and refresh work between tenants.
Can you send completion photos?
Yes. Completion photos are useful for landlords and letting agents. We can send photos of finished work where appropriate.
Can tenants book you directly?
Tenants can enquire, but permission may be needed from the landlord, agent or property owner before work starts, especially where fixtures, fittings, walls or permanent changes are involved.
Can you handle multiple jobs in one rental property?
Yes. A grouped maintenance list is often the best way to use our time efficiently. Send the full list with photos and priorities.
Do you work with factors or shared buildings?
We can work in factored or shared buildings, but you are responsible for getting any permissions needed for shared areas, access, parking, noise or building rules.
Materials and products
Can you supply materials?
Yes, for many jobs. Materials may need to be paid for in advance, especially if they are specialist, expensive, made-to-measure or non-returnable.
Can I supply my own materials?
Yes, but they must be suitable, complete and ready on site. We are not responsible for product defects, missing parts, wrong sizes or poor-quality customer-supplied items.
Can you match existing paint or finishes?
We can try, but exact matches are not always possible. Age, light, surface texture, previous paint, batch differences and wear can all affect the final look.
What happens if parts are missing?
If parts are missing, we may need to pause the job, source replacements or return another day. Extra time or visits may be chargeable.
Safety, limits and exclusions
Are you insured?
The website should list final insurance details once the business policy is confirmed. Before launch, public liability insurance details should be added if available.
Will you do unsafe work if I ask?
No. We may refuse or stop work if it appears unsafe, unlawful, outside our competence or likely to create a poor or dangerous result.
What if you find asbestos, damp, rot or unsafe electrics?
We may stop work and recommend a specialist. Hidden hazards can change the scope, cost and timescale of a job.
Do you guarantee hidden pipe or cable locations?
No. We take reasonable care, but hidden services can be difficult to identify, especially in older or altered properties. Tell us about any known pipes, cables or previous work before drilling or fixing.
Do you remove waste?
Small tidy-up from our work is usually included. Larger waste removal, old furniture, rubble, hazardous waste or tip runs must be agreed separately.
Aftercare, changes and problems
What if I am not happy with the work?
Tell us promptly with photos and a clear explanation. We should be given a reasonable opportunity to inspect and put things right where appropriate.
Do you provide a warranty?
We stand behind our workmanship, but warranties do not cover normal wear, damp, misuse, movement, product defects, customer-supplied items, pre-existing issues or work changed by others.
Can you come back for more work later?
Yes. Many customers keep a running list of small jobs and book a visit when enough tasks have built up.
Can I cancel a booking?
Yes, but late cancellation may result in charges for booked time, materials, travel or preparation. Consumer cancellation rights may apply to some distance or off-premises bookings.
What areas do you cover?
We are based in Glasgow and cover the wider Central Belt, including nearby areas across Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, Dunbartonshire, Falkirk and Stirling. Larger jobs further away can be discussed.
