Wall mounting safely: TVs, shelves, mirrors and heavy fittings

The right fixing is only right when it matches the wall, the weight and what may be hidden behind the surface.

Wall mounting safely: TVs, shelves, mirrors and heavy fittings

Know what you are hanging

A framed print, small shelf, heavy mirror and TV bracket are different jobs. Send the weight if you have it, the bracket type, the wall dimensions and photos of the fixing points. If the item has manufacturer instructions, keep them available.

Wall type matters

Plasterboard, brick, block, lath and plaster, tile and old tenement walls all behave differently. Fixings should suit the surface and expected load. If a wall sounds hollow or has previously failed, mention it before the visit.

Think before drilling

Hidden cables and pipes are a real risk. Electrical Safety First warns about DIY electrical hazards, including drilling into wiring. A detector helps, but it is not a magic guarantee. If the area is risky or unclear, the job should be approached cautiously or referred to the relevant specialist.

Older materials need care

Some older buildings may contain asbestos in certain materials. HSE guidance is clear that asbestos becomes dangerous when fibres are released. If a suspect surface could be disturbed, stop and get proper advice before drilling, sanding or removing.

Plan the final height

For TVs and mirrors, decide the height before anyone arrives. Marking the ideal centre line with low-tack tape can save time. For shelves, think about what they will hold rather than just where they look nice.
